Social Security Numbers

Brevard Elder Law

Your Social Security Number (SSN) sticks with you your whole life. Your SSN stands for something. The nine digits are usually broken into three parts. The first three digits is the area you were born or resided when the SSN was assigned. The next two digits is the group number and the last four digits are serial numbers which are assigned first come first assigned basis. The serial numbers 2001 to 2999 and 7001 to 7999 you are in a sample group. These numbers are used for statistical research into the country's changing conditions.

The nine digit system has a capacity for issuing nearly one billion SSNs and about a third of those have been issued. Even issuing 5-7 million a year, it will be a long time before all the SSNs are used.
